What is a firewall and how does it protect your network?

A firewall is a network security system that can be hardware-based, software-based, or a combination of both. It serves to monitor and control network traffic, creating a protective barrier between trusted internal networks and untrusted external ones, such as the internet. Firewalls are essential in preventing unauthorized access, malware infections, and other cyber threats by filtering suspicious data and blocking harmful traffic from entering a system. Advanced firewalls also perform deep packet inspections and can stop intrusions, further securing the network.

Why would you disable your firewall?

In some cases, you may want to disable your firewall, though this should generally be done cautiously and temporarily. Disabling the firewall could be necessary when troubleshooting network connectivity issues or if a firewall is mistakenly blocking legitimate applications or services. For example, you might disable it to allow a new device or service access to your network when the firewall is preventing proper communication. In such situations, disabling it can help you quickly determine whether the firewall is causing the problem.

What are the risks of disabling your firewall?

Disabling your firewall significantly increases the risk of malicious activity on your network. Without the firewall's protection, your system is vulnerable to attacks from hackers, malware, spyware, and other external threats. These can lead to data theft, unauthorized access, or even loss of control over your devices. Because the firewall acts as a crucial security barrier, turning it off, even briefly, can leave your network exposed, potentially resulting in financial damage or long-term harm to your devices. Always aim to re-enable the firewall as soon as possible after resolving any issues.

How to disable/enable your firewall in Windows 11

Disabling or enabling your firewall in Windows 11 is a relatively simple process that can be done through the built-in Windows Security settings. Follow the steps below to manage your firewall settings:

How to disable the firewall in Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings:
    1. Click on the Start menu and select Settings (or press Windows + I to open Settings quickly).
  2. Go to Windows Security:
    1. In the Settings window, navigate to Privacy & security on the left-hand menu.
    2. Under Privacy & security, click on Windows Security and then choose Firewall & network protection. This will open the Windows Security settings specifically for the firewall.
  3. Choose Your Network Profile:
    1. You will see three network profiles: Domain network, Private network, and Public network. Select the network profile where you want to disable the firewall (for example, Public network).
  4. Turn Off the Firewall:
    1. Under Microsoft Defender Firewall, switch the toggle to Off. This will disable the firewall for the selected network profile.
    2. Keep in mind that turning off the firewall could expose your device and network to unauthorized access and other risks.

How to enable the firewall in Windows 11:

  1. Go to Windows Security settings:
    1. As in the previous steps, open Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Firewall & network protection
  2. Select the Network Profile:
    1. Choose the network profile (Domain, Private, or Public) that you want to enable the firewall for.
  3. Turn On the Firewall:
    1. Under Microsoft Defender Firewall, switch the toggle to On to enable the firewall for that profile.

Alternative to turning off the firewall:

If you need to use an app that’s being blocked by the firewall, instead of turning the firewall off completely, you can allow the app through the firewall. This way, you maintain security while enabling specific apps to work. You can do this by selecting Allow an app through the firewall in the Firewall & network protection settings and adding the specific application you need.
