Acer’s Leap Toward AI Laptops: The Impact of Intel Ultra Processors

Computer processors (CPU) provide basic instructions that control a computer and digest many of the device’s commands. Just like the human brain, the CPU is one of the most crucial parts of a computer system as it provides the processing power computers need to work. If a processor is fast and kept updated, then the computer can complete tasks more quickly.

What is Intel® Core™ Ultra?

In December 2023, Intel introduced a new range of processors called Intel® Core™ Ultra, which form part of their 14th-generation Meteor Lake CPU series. This new range of processors indicates a higher performance power and is part of Intel’s premium brand for AI PCs. Compared to previous Intel Core processors, Core Ultra processors have a reduced power consumption of up to 25% but still offer high gaming performance power.

What is an AI laptop?

AI PCs are still relatively new, with computer companies still finding their feet in this rapidly developing industry. To be classified as an AI PC, laptops should have an Neural Processing Unit (NPU) with at least 10 TOPS of processing power. Intel stands at the forefront of AI PCs with Intel® Core™ Ultra, the first PC platform to include an integrated NPU that handles AI and machine learning tasks instead of sending them to the cloud. AI laptops and PCs include built-in virtual assistants ready to handle daily tasks like creating documents, taking meeting minutes, or drafting emails. These virtual assistants run directly on the PC and are trained with the user’s data rather than public data like generative AI models do. They are more useful to individual users as they offer a highly personalized service akin to a personal assistant.

Why use Intel® Core™ Ultra for AI laptops?

By now, many people will have dabbled with AI on their phones, laptops, or through using a Generative AI Chatbot. Intel® Core™ Ultra Processors take this to the next level by offering integrated AI possibilities that make computers AI-ready. The NPU uses AI to handle tasks instead of relying on the cloud, offering users a comprehensive AI experience. Delegating mundane or repetitive tasks to AI lets users focus on important issues and helps streamline their workload. For example, the text-to-image feature on imaging software uses short descriptions to create AI-generated pictures, removing the need to outsource or spend hours designing materials.

Intel® Core™ Ultra portfolio

The Intel® Core™ Ultra portfolio includes Core 3, 5, 7, and 9 processors. These processors feature 3D performance hybrid architecture and combine two core microarchitectures on one chip.

Launched in 2023, the Core Ultra 5 125 processor offers 14 cores and 18 threads. Although it is slightly less powerful than newer chips, it still provides a 4.5 GHz max turbo frequency. With 16 total cores, including performance, efficient, and low-power cores, the Core Ultra 7 165H chip enhances multi-threading performance by 11%. It also features 22 threads and is Intel’s second-most powerful processing chip. The Core Ultra 9 185H processor is Intel’s latest chip, offering 16 cores and 22 threads.
