SOUTH PARK: SNOW DAY! is a four-player cooperative adventure game coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on March 26. The upcoming title is full of frosty action and, of course, the South Park series’ signature foul-mouth humor.

Introduction to the South Park series

South Park is an American animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The series began in 1997 and is currently in its twenty-sixth season. More than 300 episodes have aired since it began, and the show has inspired feature films, specials, made-for-television movies, film shorts, and several video games based on its IP.

The animated comedy about four foul-mouthed boys from Colorado has been a consistent presence in the American public conscience for three decades. It originally became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a large range of subject matter. Over time, it has evolved from drawing audiences to its shock humor to being one of the most important satirical voices in America. The show has caused a number of controversies regarding its content, especially its parodies of certain celebrities and current events.

At its core, South Park is a platform for social and political commentary. The show fearlessly addresses a wide range of sensitive topics, including religion, politics, celebrity culture, and societal norms. By using satire and exaggeration, South Park cleverly exposes hypocrisy, challenges taboos, and provokes thought-provoking discussions, often leaving viewers with a mix of laughter and introspection.

SOUTH PARK: SNOW DAY!

The upcoming new South Park game is a multiplayer action-adventure battle game in which players take on the role of The New Kid and join with three others to fight against waves of enemies in their blizzard-struck town, using a combination of melee and ranged weapons and special powers. Unlike the TV show, SNOW DAY! has been developed entirely in 3D, and this makes the snowy action all the more exciting, although fans of the series may miss the iconic 2D South Park style.

The game is being developed by Question LLC and published by THQ Nordic in association with South Park Digital Studios, the entertainment company and animation and development studio founded by Matt Stone and Trey Parker that is dedicated to creating and managing streaming, social, and interactive for South Park.

In the game, the epic quest with Cartman, Stan, Kyle, and Kenny begins when a blizzard blankets the boys’ Colorado town in snow, causing school to be canceled and allowing the boys to celebrate the most magical day in any young child’s life—a snow day! The story is simple: it's snowing in South Park and the kids have a day off to play fantasy war games. What’s not simple though is why the snow won't stop, with the story suggesting something more than just climate could be at work here.

Similar to South Park: The Stick of Truth and its sequel (South Park: The Fractured but Whole)—the most popular South Park games to date—the adventure in SNOW DAY! is told through the lens of a make-believe high-fantasy adventure. However, unlike the previous games, which are RPGs, SNOW DAY! ditches turn-based combat in favor of a more action-oriented experience, swapping the mechanics of a big fantasy RPG for the simpler yet more chaotic co-op battle gameplay style.

SOUTH PARK: SNOW DAY! gameplay

In teams of four (playing with friends or with AI bots), players do roguelike runs through different areas of South Park. The areas contain various items, some of which are randomly generated and so change in each run. Players have a melee weapon, a ranged weapon, and two special powers and battle with waves of enemies and the odd boss, collecting in-game currencies as you go. How many runs the overall campaign will involve is not yet clear, but the developers have said they plan to add more content to the game over time.

Bulls**t cards and Upload cards

The two special powers that you get per run are bestowed through Bulls**t cards and Upload cards that are overseen by Paladin Butters. The cards offer a range of magic and other abilities and various upgrades and are chosen by players at the start of each run and also when you run into upgrade-givers at the end of different sections of a run. Players choose one upgrade and one Bulls**t card, and the cards reset at the end of the run. One of the Bulls**t cards we have seen so far gives you laser eyes abilities. The “Radioactive God” card makes your team emit fumes to gross out your enemies, and the “Meteor Storm” card makes meteors fall from the sky (onto your enemies, of course). The abilities that come with Bulls**t cards are heavily rationed though; they can only be used two or three times, depending on the card, per run.

Upgrade cards allow for a range of upgrades, including increasing the damage a staff can do, giving a bow a multi-arrow effect, and speeding up healing.

Cosmetics

Characters can be customized with various clothing options that persist between runs, with one cosmetics-related DLC (The Underpants Gnome Cosmetics Pack) already being available for free for those who preorder the game. This particular pack includes a gnome hat, shirt, and beard for your character to wear to make them look like the underpants-thieving gnomes from the TV show. Other cosmetics, like chin balls, are also available.

In-game currency

During runs, players collect three types of currency from chests located around the town. The types of currency are toilet paper, dark matter, and platinum pieces (also known as PP). Toilet paper can be spent to increase the power of upgrade cards or to re-roll choices at the store, which happens to be run by Jimmy the Bard. Dark matter is used between runs to buy perks and increase your speed, stamina, health, and strength stats, all of which persist between runs. Platinum pieces are earned through gameplay progression and by conquering certain challenges; they unlock new cosmetics and emotes to keep your New Kid looking new.
