Paradox is a master of the grand strategy genre, producing expandable games that are easily modded, as well as board games. Paradox Interactive video games predominantly fall into the historically-themed grand strategy genre, you may have played titles such as Imperator: Rome, and Crusader Kings III.

It has been five years since the release of Battletech, so we reckon The Lamplighters League will be something special!

What is The Lamplighters League release date?

Set in an alternate version of the 1930s, The Lamplighters League is a turn-based tactical combat and strategy game, released on October 3rd 2023 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S.

What’s the story?

The Lamplighters League is set in the year 1932. A global, secret occult war is nearly lost! A tyrannical cult, the Banished Court are a few steps away from world domination, having wiped out the best of the best. The last chance to save earth from this evil cult lies with the best of the worst: a motley crew of thieves, scoundrels, cut-throats and traitors, The Lamplighters League. Inspired by Pulp magazines of the 1930s, the stylish characters, settings and overall aesthetic of The Lamplighters League make this game truly stand out in the strategy genre.

So, your mission in The Lamplighters League is to recruit a ragtag team of scallywags, all with their own unique abilities, destroy the Banished Court and save the world. Sounds fun? Let’s check the characters in The Lamplighters League.

Who are the lamplighters?

There are a total of ten agents in The Lamplighters League. You start the game with three agents, and must work to recruit the remaining seven as you travel the world fighting the forces of evil. Each of the agents has a unique set of skills, weapons and abilities. You begin the game with Eddie, a WW1 veteran who has taken to bank robbing, he totes a revolver in each hand. Eddie is joined by Ingrid, a quick footed brawler and femme fatale with a taste for beating her enemies up close and personal. A successful knockout only spurs her on to more violence, allowing her to take out more baddies. The terrific trio is completed by Lateef, A.K.A The Gentleman-Djinn, a light-fingered master thief with lightning fast reflexes.

Eddie the saboteur, Ingrid the bruiser, and Lateef the sneak must work together to enlist the help of the seven other misfits, including healer Ana Sofía, and Jianyi, the mystic swordsman. Only by working together as The Lamplighters League, will they be able to defeat the Banished court once and for all.

Gameplay

The Lamplighters League is an enthralling cocktail of real-time infiltration and turn-based tactical combat, driven by a character-based story of adventure and intrigue. Blending the excitement of real-time stealth adventure with turn based combat, The Lamplighters League allows you to sneak around and conduct recon before the bullets start flying.

Each mission is split into two parts. First comes the real-time infiltration: employ the various tactical/combat skills of The Lamplighters League characters, to get oriented with the environment and mission. During this stage players can pick up helpful items such as weapons and other resources, while positioning the members of your group in tactically effective locations. After you are (inevitably) discovered, the turn-based combat commences!

The tactical turn-based combat involves running between cover and using special abilities to take out the enemies. Each of the characters has unique attack skills, from long range to up close and personal fisticuffs. The baddies take various forms in The Lamplighters League, from gas-masked guards to more fearsome level bosses, called Scions. After you have defeated all of the enemies in a specific location, you will return to infiltration mode, and move on to the next mission.

A cool feature of The Lamplighters League is how each character excels in different fields. To succeed, you must make the most of their unique skill sets during infiltration mode and combat. For example, Eddie can lay mines and lock doors during infiltration mode, then use his mid-range firepower during combat mode. As you progress through the game, your team will grow, as will your strategic abilities and resources to defeat the forces of evil. What’s more, after each mission, your team (or some of your team) can return to the player’s headquarters for some much needed R&R. Put your strategy skills to the test today, and help save the world from the Banished Court!
