How to Catch Big Fish (Whoppers) in Monster Hunter Wilds
Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds is both fun and rewarding, especially when you manage to reel in the giant fish known as "Whoppers." These impressive aquatic creatures are the focus of Kanya's "Catch of a Lifetime!" side quest, available at the Scarlet Forest base camp. To access all the necessary baits for these giants, you'll first need to complete each of Kanya's earlier quests. Here's what you need to know.
What exactly is a whopper?
Whoppers are large, challenging fish that require patience and a bit of skill to catch. There are five unique species you'll encounter:
- Gajau
- Gastronome Tuna
- Great Trevally
- Speartuna
- Goliath Squid
Where to find whoppers
You can find all these giant fish at Area 17 (Great Lake Shore) in the Scarlet Forest. Keep an eye out for their distinctive large fins or tentacles visibly sticking out from the water.
Best conditions for catching each fish:
- Gajau: Available anytime, under any weather conditions.
- Great Trevally: Mainly during the day, especially during "Plenty."
- Gastronome Tuna: Exclusively during "Plenty."
- Speartuna: Found during "Fallow" and in morning hours.
- Goliath Squid: At night, most commonly during "Plenty."
How to catch whoppers
To successfully catch a whopper, you'll have to carefully choose your bait, manage your line tension, and respond quickly to the fish's actions.
Begin by selecting the appropriate bait:
- Duster Rig for Gajau.
- Tentacle Jig for Goliath Squid.
- Tuff Joint Bait for Speartuna, Gastronome Tuna, and Great Trevally.
Cast your line slightly beyond and ahead of the fish, then slowly reel it back, occasionally pausing your left thumbstick or quickly right-click (PC).
Once hooked, you'll need to carefully manage your line. Match the fish's movement left or right using your left thumbstick (hold down A or D for PC) . If the fish slows down or tires, quickly rotate your thumbstick or rapidly tap WASD (PC) to reel it in faster.
Sometimes obstacles appear in the water. If this happens, guide the fish away by moving your controls in the opposite direction until it's clear.
Occasionally, the fish will jump:
- Controller: Move your thumbstick in the direction of the jump (up, left, or right) and press R2.
- PC: Press W (jumping upwards), A (jumping left), or D (jumping right) and simultaneously right-click your mouse.
Repeat these steps, staying patient, until the fish tires out and you successfully reel it in.
Rare and special fishing rewards
Successfully catching whoppers doesn't just provide a sense of accomplishment—you can also earn unique and valuable rewards:
- Gastronome Tuna: Ancient Wyvern Coin, Chaliceweed, Royal Sea Pot, Sparkly Treasure, Fine Scarlet Amber, Truffle Du Conga (Tradeable items).
- Gajau: Gajau Hide (Crafting item for armor).
- Speartuna: Speartuna Fin (Crafting item for weapons).
