Microsoft recently announced it will be shutting down the free internet-based voice and video calling service Skype in May this year. The service launched in 2003, disrupting the landline industry and giving millions of worldwide users the option to call anywhere in the world for free. However, the once-popular platform’s user base fell from 150 million at its peak to around 23 million by 2020 as other services like FaceTime and Zoom became available. Skype users will still be able to use their login details to access Microsoft Teams, with chats and contacts migrating automatically to ease the transition.

Here are some Skype alternatives to consider for 2025.

1. Microsoft Teams

When announcing the retirement of Skype, Microsoft stated it would instead be focusing on its free communications and collaboration hub Teams. Microsoft Teams offers many of the same features, such as voice and video calls, messaging, and file sharing. In addition, Teams offers an array of more advanced features, like hosting meetings, managing calendars, and joining communities. Microsoft Teams is already widely used by individuals, schools, and companies worldwide, making it an ideal alternative to Skype.

2. Zoom

Founded in 2011 with a vision of providing frictionless video calls, Zoom has transformed into an AI-powered collaboration platform and a household name. Zoom was a popular method of communication during the pandemic as it gave people and businesses a way to stay connected for free. Its business service, Zoom Workplace, offers features that streamline hybrid working, such as breakout rooms, workspace reservations, digital signage, and integration with mail and calendars, providing a collaborative platform that works for everyone.

3. Google Meet

Google Meet is another alternative to Skype, with tools and features for all types of users. The platform automatically adjusts video lighting and reduces background noise and interference, while live captions let users view subtitles in real time. Google Meet seamlessly integrates with Google Workspace so users can jointly work on documents and spreadsheets, and answer poll questions. Moreover, Gemini for Google Workspace uses the power of generative AI to take notes during meetings, boosting productivity and making sure users don’t miss a single detail.

4. Chanty

Chanty is a collaboration platform that provides communication and management tools and is used by over 75,000 companies worldwide. The platform is user-friendly and organizes tasks, conversations, pinned messages, and other content in a Teambook, allowing quick access to data at any time. It also offers a Kanban board, giving a handy overview of tasks and ensuring colleagues never miss a deadline.

6. Jitsi

With over 20 million monthly active users, Jitsi is a set of open-source projects that let users build and utilize video conferencing solutions. The Jitsi Meet video conferencing platform lets meeting attendees share documents, raise their hands for attention, stream conferences to YouTube, and lock rooms with a password.

7. MiroTalk

MiroTalk SFU is a free browser-based voice and video call service. The platform also offers a collaborative whiteboard, file sharing, and integrated ChatGPT with Video AI to answer questions and connect users with useful resources.

The platform was launched in 2015 and is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and via web browsers.

9. WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a free messaging application owned by Meta. It lets users send text, voice, and video messages, make voice and video calls, and share media and documents using an internet connection. The service includes end-to-end encryption, meaning only the sender and receiver can access messages. Moreover, WhatsApp Business helps business owners showcase their products and services to customers worldwide.

10. StreamYard

Alternatives to Skype: the lowdown

Although the much-loved voice and video calling service Skype will no longer operate from May this year, there are still many similar platforms available. Existing Skype users will notice that their account will function on Microsoft Teams, or they can select another platform depending on their needs. Be sure to check that your chosen communication and collaboration platform offers your required features, and shop around if you are still not sure about which is most suitable.
