The first quarter of 2025 is shaping up to be an unforgettable time for gamers, with a lineup of highly anticipated titles that span genres and platforms. From the stealthy WWII action of Sniper Elite: Resistance to the sprawling medieval adventures of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, there’s something for everyone. Strategy fans can look forward to Civilization 7's triumphant return, while RPG enthusiasts will be spoiled with Avowed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and the bold new Monster Hunter Wilds. Rounding out the list is The First Berserker: Khazan, a dark and brutal RPG that promises to deliver intense action and deep storytelling. With innovative mechanics, breathtaking settings, and stories to get lost in, these games are ready to define the early months of 2025.

1. Sniper Elite: Resistance

Rebellion’s Sniper Elite: Resistance launches January 30, 2025, for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC, with Day One availability on Game Pass. Acting as a standalone spin-off to Sniper Elite 5, this game offers players a new perspective on WWII’s Western European theater. Set concurrently with the main campaign of Sniper Elite 5, players take on the role of Harry Hawker, a brash and resourceful British operative working closely with the French Resistance. Packed with stealth, sniper tactics, and thrilling action, the game introduces new features like “propaganda missions,” replayable challenges that immerse players in the lives of local resistance fighters. While the mechanics and visuals align closely with its predecessor, Resistance offers fresh maps, an intriguing super-weapon plotline, and a co-op campaign to keep players hooked.

Staying true to the series’ roots, Resistance combines meticulously designed levels with its signature x-ray kill cams and tense stealth gameplay. Players can expect to explore 1940s France through both traditional sniper encounters and up-close-and-personal tactics using traps, distractions, and melee. While it doesn’t stray far from the Sniper Elite formula, the addition of multiplayer features, including 16-player PvP and Axis Invasion, bolsters its replayability. With a story-driven campaign, an engaging new protagonist, and a variety of ways to approach missions, Sniper Elite: Resistance is poised to deliver the gritty action fans of the series have come to love, ensuring it stands out as a must-play title in early 2025.

2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

The wait is nearly over for fans of medieval RPGs, as Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 will officially launch on February 4, 2025, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Developed by Warhorse Studios, this highly anticipated sequel picks up where the first game left off, placing players back in the boots of Henry of Skalitz. As a peasant-turned-hero, Henry embarks on a quest to avenge his parents’ deaths while navigating the brutal realities of 15th-century Bohemia. Following the success of its predecessor, known for its authentic medieval setting and intricate storytelling, the sequel promises to build upon that foundation with enhanced combat mechanics, richer environments, and more player-driven choices.

Trailers and gameplay showcases hint at a more polished and immersive experience. From brutal battles featuring medieval martial arts to the intricate consequences of player decisions, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 looks poised to deliver an unforgettable adventure. Customization plays a key role, allowing players to shape Henry’s skills, relationships, and journey in a world that reacts dynamically to their actions. With features like blacksmithing, romance, and large-scale battles—including sieges and horseback combat—this sequel promises a grander and deeper narrative experience. Whether players engage in elegant swordplay or raw, barbaric melees, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is set to be a highlight of 2025 for RPG enthusiasts.

3. Sid Meier's Civilization VII

After a nine-year wait, Civilization 7 is set to launch on February 11, 2025, bringing Firaxis’ iconic strategy series back to center stage. Available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, this latest installment promises to refine the formula that has captivated fans for decades. From building cities and forging alliances to conquering rival civilizations, Civilization 7 retains the hallmark gameplay loop while introducing fresh mechanics and modern upgrades. Early access begins February 6, 2025, for those who pre-order the Deluxe or Founders editions, offering an early taste of its strategic depth.

The trailers showcase sprawling maps, legendary leaders, and an exciting blend of old and new mechanics that promise to keep players engaged for hours. Firaxis seems determined to deliver the most immersive Civ yet, though fans might still chuckle nervously, wondering if Gandhi will once again find his way to the nuclear button. With its rich legacy and a fresh coat of polish, Civilization 7 is poised to redefine the strategy genre for a new generation of players.

4. Avowed

Mark your calendars: Avowed, the latest RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, is set to release on February 18, 2025, for PC and Xbox Series X, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. Returning to the world of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed is shaping up to be a standout single-player adventure. Players will explore the dense, compartmentalized zones of The Living Lands, a fantastical setting brought to life with vibrant biomes and a rich narrative. The game offers deep customization, with character creation options that influence gameplay, and a flexible combat system allowing players to dual-wield weapons and magic in innovative combinations.

For fans of Fallout: New Vegas, the idea of Obsidian channeling its RPG brilliance into a Skyrim-like setting is nothing short of thrilling. Avowed promises the best of both worlds—deep, impactful storytelling and an immersive fantasy backdrop. With Obsidian’s proven track record for crafting memorable worlds and characters, Avowed has the potential to rival the genre’s greatest titles. Whether you’re swinging a sword, slinging spells, or navigating the politics of Eora, this feels like the kind of game that will remind us why Obsidian is one of the most beloved names in RPG history

5. Monster Hunter Wilds

Capcom is set to redefine the action RPG genre once again with Monster Hunter Wilds, launching February 28, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This follow-up to the record-breaking Monster Hunter World carries the weight of being the successor to Capcom’s best-selling title. Revealed during the September 2024 PlayStation State of Play event, the game promises a visually stunning experience, packed with massive beasts, lush environments, and innovative gameplay features. From the introduction of mounts called Seikrets that aid in tracking and combat to dynamic weather systems that influence both the environment and monster behavior, Monster Hunter Wilds is poised to deliver an unparalleled adventure.

The game will feature an all-new narrative centered around a mythical beast known as the White Wraith (Arkveld) and its ties to a mysterious young boy. Players will also encounter an impressive lineup of monsters, including the spider-like Lala Barina, the electric wyvern Rey Dau, and the leviathan Uth Duna. New mechanics, such as mid-battle weapon switching and expanded cooking systems, add depth to the gameplay while preserving the franchise’s beloved core mechanics. With simultaneous platform availability and a variety of pre-order bonuses, Monster Hunter Wilds builds on its legacy while charting a bold path forward, making it one of 2025’s most anticipated releases.

6. Assassin's Creed Shadows

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows, now postponed again to March 20, 2025, promises to deliver the ultimate Shinobi fantasy, immersing players in the rich and turbulent Azuchi-Momoyama era of Feudal Japan. Featuring dual protagonists—Naoe, a stealthy shinobi, and Yasuke, the first-ever Black samurai—the game introduces a fresh dynamic with two distinct playstyles. Players will toggle between Yasuke’s heavy-hitting combat and Naoe’s stealth-driven maneuvers, offering a blend of the franchise’s traditional mechanics with new layers of complexity. The expansive, Assassin’s Creed Origins-sized map brings realistic terrain and a physics-based grappling system, enhancing both exploration and verticality. With a dynamic weather system impacting missions and storytelling, Shadows elevates the series’ open-world formula.

While excitement runs high for Shadows, the game hasn’t been without its controversies. Delays, pre-order refunds, and lingering skepticism around Ubisoft’s ambitious promises have raised questions among fans. However, it’s worth giving Ubisoft the opportunity to prove the skeptics wrong. This Japanese setting has been a long-awaited dream for many, and Shadows could very well redefine what the franchise is capable of achieving. That said, I recommend holding off on pre-purchasing the game. Waiting for full reviews closer to release will ensure you have a clear picture of whether this title lives up to its potential.

7. The First Berserker: Khazan

The First Berserker: Khazan, a gripping new action RPG from Korean developer Neople and publisher Nexon, is set to release on March 27, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Before its full launch, players can experience a demo starting January 16, 2025, with progress carrying over to the full game. Set in the universe of Dungeon Fighter Online (DNF)—one of the highest-grossing games of all time—Khazan shifts the tone to a darker, more visceral narrative, telling the story of a betrayed hero seeking vengeance. First revealed in December 2023 and heavily inspired by the Berserk manga and FromSoftware’s Souls series, the game promises to combine intense combat with a rich, anime-inspired aesthetic.

Players take on the role of Khazan, a disgraced general falsely accused of treason, as he battles to survive imperial forces, unravel conspiracies, and reclaim his lost honor. With brutal hack-and-slash gameplay, extensive character customization, and challenging boss encounters, The First Berserker: Khazan stands out as a hardcore RPG experience. Its connection to DNF ensures fans will recognize its dynamic combat roots, while the addition of a deep narrative and atmospheric world expands the franchise’s appeal. Pre-order bonuses, including exclusive armor sets and early access, have already sparked excitement, positioning The First Berserker: Khazan as one of 2025’s most anticipated titles.
