A Step-by-Step Guide to Upgrading Your Acer Laptop’s RAM

If your Acer laptop is a little too sluggish for your taste, don’t run out to buy a new device—consider upgrading its Random Access Memory (RAM) instead. RAM is your computer’s short-term memory. It temporarily stores data and program instructions currently in use, allowing quick access and smooth operation. Higher RAM not only allows your computer to handle more tasks simultaneously and run programs more smoothly, but also reduces the chances of system crashes. This is why a RAM upgrade can be a simple and effective way to improve a laptop’s overall performance.

Users may have different reasons for considering a RAM upgrade. Avid gamers may bump up the RAM on their Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop for the smoothest gameplay possible. Students with an Aspire 5 or Aspire Vero Green Laptop may require additional speed if they have more complex computing tasks like programming or graphic design. Perhaps you simply want a streamlined browsing and streaming experience on your Acer device. This guide will walk you through the process of upgrading RAM on your Acer laptop, from compatibility checks to safe installation steps.

Considerations for Upgrading RAM on Your Acer Laptop

Not all Acer models allow RAM upgrades, so the first step is to verify that you can install more memory in your laptop. You’ll also need to determine the correct type and amount of RAM that you can add. Here’s how to do these:

  1. Identify your Acer laptop model.
As different Acer models have varying RAM types and capacities, it’s crucial to know your specific model number. You can find this on a sticker label on the bottom of your laptop. Alternatively, you can find your model number using your Settings app in Windows. Open Settings, go to System, then click on About. You’ll find your Acer model number under Device Specifications.
Examples of Acer model numbers are Nitro 5 AN515-58-73RS, Predator Helios 18 PH18-72-90C9, and Aspire Vero AV14-51-59UW.
  2. Check upgradability and identify compatible RAM for your Acer laptop.
Consult your user manual or system information to confirm if your model supports RAM upgrades and find out what kind of RAM will be compatible with your device.
Look for the maximum supported RAM, number of RAM slots, and current RAM capacity. Your laptop will have a limited number of RAM slots, and upgrading may mean adding new RAM to empty slots or replacing existing modules. Note that you should not exceed the amount of RAM your laptop can handle, even if you still have an empty RAM slot.
You can also use online tools, such as product finders on the Crucial and Kingston websites, to find compatible RAM modules for your specific laptop model.
  3. Purchase the right RAM.
Once you’ve identified the type and maximum capacity of RAM your laptop can support, you can buy compatible RAM for your upgrade. Popular brands include Corsair, Crucial, and Kingston.

How to Install More RAM on Your Acer Laptop

Upgrading the RAM on your Acer laptop is a fairly straightforward process that you can do yourself. Keep in mind that opening your laptop and installing new hardware may void the warranty. If this is something you’re concerned about, check your warranty terms or contact Acer Support for clarification before proceeding.

Before you install the additional RAM, gather the tools you need: a small Phillips screwdriver, a plastic prying tool (optional, but helpful), and your new RAM modules. Back up your data, too—it’s always wise to do so in case of unforeseen circumstances. As a final precaution, you may want to wear an anti-static wrist strap or touch a metal surface before you start working. Make sure that you’re not working on a fabric surface like a carpet or rug. These safety measures prevent or discharge any static electricity that could damage your laptop’s sensitive hardware.

Ready to begin? Here are the steps in upgrading your Acer laptop’s RAM:

1. Turn off your Acer laptop and disconnect it from the power cord.

Remove any external devices like USB drives or headphones. If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out as well.

2. Open the back panel and find the RAM slots.

Their location can vary depending on the laptop model. Look for the small, rectangular RAM modules held in place by long, thin clips on either side.

3. Remove existing RAM (optional).

If you’re replacing existing RAM with a higher-capacity module, you can remove it by gently pressing down on the latches on either side of the RAM slot, pulling them away from the RAM. The module will pop up at an angle. Take it out carefully and only touch the edges. Repeat this step for any additional modules you’re replacing.

4. Install the new RAM.

Hold the new RAM module by its edges and align its notches with those on the RAM compartment. Insert the RAM module at an angle until the clips on either side click into place. Make sure the module is level and securely seated.

5. Replace the back panel carefully.

If you removed your laptop’s battery, reinstall it.

6. Turn on your laptop to verify the RAM upgrade.

When you do this for the first time after the upgrade, it might take a few moments longer to boot up as the system recognizes the new RAM. This isn’t cause for alarm. Once booted up, access your system information to confirm that your laptop recognizes the new RAM capacity.
