When and Where Will the Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition Take Place?

Options

Mortal Kombat is a renowned series of fighting games originally developed by Midway Games. It began in 1992, and many of its features quickly became famous, including, most notably the Fatalities, finishing moves that allow the victor of the final round to execute their opponent.

With 11 main installments, NetherRealm Studios and its parent company, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, decided to give the franchise a soft reboot with Mortal Kombat 1, released on September 19, 2023.

Mortal Kombat 1 follows the events in Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion pack. The fire god Liu Kang gathers a team of formidable fighters to compete in (and hopefully win) the Mortal Kombat tournament and finally stop the villain Shang Tsung.

Mortal Kombat 1 received positive reviews from critics and brought new life to the franchise. Taking advantage of the excitement, the official tournament, Pro Kompetition, was announced in October 2023.

The Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition Leagues

The Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition Leagues is an esports championship featuring both online contests and electrifying offline face-offs. The ultimate stage is the Final Kompetition, happening in June 2024.

Only the 20 best players around the globe will have a chance at participating in the finals.

The leagues consist of regional competitions, with several online events happening all around the globe since the announcement last year. More online tournaments will take place this year until the final competition in June. Although there are many online events, there are only four big offline MK1 tournaments:

  1. The East Coast Throwdown that took place in Stamford, Connecticut, in October 2023
  2. The Ultimate Fighting Arena, held in Paris, France, in October last year
  3. The Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition - Brazil Offline which will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in March 2024
  4. Combo Breaker, in Schaumburg, Illinois, which will be the final offline competition in May

The players in the first positions will have points added to their global total. The winners of the offline tournaments get up to 400 points, while those who conquer the offline competitions receive a maximum of 210 points.

By the time the Final Kompetition rolls out, the 20 players with the most points worldwide will receive an invitation to participate in the finals. The winner will enjoy the glory of becoming the best MK1 player in the world, plus a hefty cash prize.

The Winners so Far

According to Liquipedia, as of late January 2024, the rankings are as follows:

  1. Young_Chicuelo: 420 points.
  2. SonicFox: 400 points.
  3. Tekken Master: 400 points.
  4. YakuzzaKnigth: 355 points.
  5. Scorpion: 330 points.

Tekken Master and SonicFox won the Ultimate Fighting Arena 2023 and East Coast Throwdown 2023 offline tournaments, respectively. However, that doesn't mean their spot in the finals is guaranteed. They need to keep accumulating points until June to secure their place.

Do you want to try your hand at one of these online tournaments? The inscriptions are open to anyone, regardless of their level of experience. With some practice and a good set of skills, you could be the next one in the top five.

FINISH HIM: A Look at the Strongest MK1 Characters

Chances are that even if you never played a Mortal Kombat game, you have heard of some of its most famous characters, like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, or Kitana.

So far, popularity hasn't been the determining factor for pro players to choose their characters when entering the matches of MK1. Many contestants have gone with classic characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, with Johnny Cage and Raiden being the unexpected dark horses of the competition.

Regarding Kameo Fighters (fighters chosen separately from the main character that can assist you during the match at any time), some of the most popular picks are Cyrax, Jax, and Kano.

However, these characters aren't exactly the strongest warriors. The sorcerer Shang Tsung, capable of swaying the fabric of reality, is the most powerful villain, while the thunder god Raiden is considered the strongest good character.

The Kompetition Rages

The Mortal Kombat 1 Pro Kompetition Leagues are not merely a clash of combos and fatalities; they are the ultimate trial for those who have been honing their skills in Mortal Kombat 1.

These tournaments have reinvigorated the passion for a timeless franchise, and as the competition rages on, so does the spirit of competition, with players worldwide eager for the next great battle.

Who, among the best around the globe, will rise to the top? Only time will tell.
